No Word Yet…

Today has officially been 2 weeks since myself, my husband, and our 4-year old son had blood work done to find out if any of us are a bone marrow match for Kyle.
But the day went by without a phone call, and now I’m worried that none of us are a match so they didn’t bother to call. For some reason a phone call from those people seems to be too much to ask. Whenever I call their office to get an update, I never get a call back and then they wonder why I keep talking to the doctors in Toronto.
To be honest, I don’t like the doctors in London. I feel as though we don’t really matter, that we’re not doctors so we don’t need to be kept in the loop until decisions are made. But I don’t care if you don’t know what’s going on yet, or you don’t have answers, at least have the decency to tell me that so I don’t wonder and worry.
Whatever happened to the bedside manner of the old days?

Melissa,
I’m praying that one of you is a match. Praying hard.

You have an adorable little boy, and my prayers are with you!! God-willing, we get the funds, you will also offer a financial contribution.
Can only family be tested? I will pray a match is found for you!

I’m so sorry you have to wait like this to hear from the doctors. My brother has the same problem. He goes into a visit to see if his cancer has returned again and then noone ever bothers to call him to tell him.
My brother just figures no news is good news, but you’d think they’d at least call. He does get a little unsettled during those visits.
He had a bone marrow transplant too, which has extended his life a bit and put him into remission for now. A great blessing!
I will keep your precious little boy and your family in my prayers.

Hi Melissa,
I found you through Carrie/Hannah’s blog. Have you considered cord blood? If Kyle has already been typed then you can start searching public cord blood banks. Cord blood stem cells are less likely to be rejected than adult bone marrow stem cells. (When we were hoping this could still be an option for our son, this is what turned up in my research. We even took Bertrand to see Dr. Kurtzberg at Duke.) The Carolina Cord Blood Bank is run by Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg, and even if you don’t go to Duke University to get Kyle’s transplant done, she may be able to help point you to colleagues/resources in Canada. Shoot me an email if I can help facilitate.
We’re keeping Kyle in our thoughts and hearts.

Hi Cristina,
Yes, cord blood is in consideration. The first step is to see if our 4-year old is a bone marrow match. They told us that sibling donors are the way to go because it brings down the chance of rejection.
We don’t have results from those blood tests yet. But I’ve been seriously considering telling them that if Jason isn’t a match for Kyle, then I want cord blood.
I would love some more information on cord blood transplants, please feel free to email me at kyle@acherishedangel.com.
